Rescue story
Gertie is our oldest resident. She is in her late forties, which for a donkey is a long and remarkable life, and she came to us from Georgia as one of eight who arrived here together. Their owner had fallen on hard times. Not neglect, nothing cruel. She simply reached a point where she could no longer give them what they needed, and rather than let them slip through the cracks she made sure they landed somewhere safe. That is one of the hardest things a person can do and we have never forgotten it. Her daughter Nellie came with her, and the two of them have not been apart since. Nellie watches over her mama. At Gertie's age that means something, and we let those two be exactly as connected as they want to be. The small pasture up by the house carries her name.

Gertie from Georgia is looked after with the help of Renea May, whose monthly support pays for feed, feet and vet care.
