Rescue story
Millie is a Mammoth, the largest donkey there is, and when she got here she could barely walk. She had a tendon injury that had gone untreated and a pressure sore so large and so infected that it had maggots in it. You could smell her before you reached her. More than one vet had already looked at her and declined to touch it. We took her to Tennessee Equine Hospital. She went through a massive surgery and then six months of recovery, and there is no shortcut through six months. She lived in a stall right by the house so we could get to her, and Rick and I changed her dressings every single day. You cannot do that for somebody for six months and stay strangers. She grew close to us in a way that is hard to explain to people who have not sat on a stall floor at six in the morning with an animal who has decided to trust you. She has been adopted since she healed, by someone who came along after all of it and kept her name. She is our biggest success story. Not because of the surgery, though that was remarkable. Because of what she chose to become on the other side of it.
